When in Rome why not get a BQ!

When we moved back to Texas from Washington state last year (2022), I didn't have a lot of road marathoners on my roster. In Washington I was predominantly coaching trail/ultra and high school athletes (sprints, XC, middle distance, etc.). I did work with quite a few road runners, but not very many were doing marathons at the time. Since moving back to the Austin area that changed quite a bit. For whatever reason I ended up with several athletes, even some of my WA state runners, looking to hop into the marathon.
Early on in my coaching business, I worked with a handful of road marathoners. I had to fight with some of them since my 'speed/strength first' approach wasn't typical of what other coaches were doing at the time. I broke a lot of the tempos apart and structured training around recovery. For some of them that meant more cross training, especially my injury prone athletes. 20 years ago, you might say it was a lot of "outside the box" type of stuff. Fast forward to last year and we began a streak of success on the roads, several PR's, a good handful of Boston qualifying times and some near misses. As a coach, I've had a lot of fun with it. Every single one of my road marathoners out performed predicted times in the past year. Now we're ramping it back up again!
Locally, we're building a group for the Houston Marathon January 13th, 2024. If you're looking for a group to train with come join us even if you're not running that specific race, but have something in the same time frame it will work. Currently, we meet on Saturday's at 7-7:30 AM at Lady Bird Lake for a long run. As the weather cools I will open up some mid-week workouts (locations TBD, but likely south or west sides of town), and hopefully we'll have AM and PM workouts to choose from. I have a couple options to join the group. You can sign up with me through Team RunRun. I'll program all of your workouts and do a full training plan for you. OR, you can buy a punch-card and just join us for the mid-week and long run workouts. Long runs will typically have some kind of tempo work. Contact me for details or to set up a consultation. First workout is on me!
